Avoiding condensation and mould growth in your room

Published on 07/09/2020 by Aboveboard Lettings

Having rented properties to tenants for over ten years, the one thing we often see and advise our students against is the one most innocuous and seemingly-ok thing to do:  drying damp clothes or towels in bedrooms.

When our houses are heated nicely, it’s all the more easy to think, ‘what’s the big deal if I place my towel/undergarments on/near my radiator so it gets nice, warm and dry?’

When you do this, moisture evaporates from the towel/clothing and condenses on the window (pretty much like what would happen if you boiled a kettle in your room) – your windows steam up, the water runs down the glass and collects around the base of the window.

You only have to do this once or twice, and you will find black mould starting to grow on the window sills and frames.  Black mould thrives in humid environments and is a hazard to respiratory health – read about the impact this can have on your health

In our properties, we provide facilities such as washer dryers or tumble dryers, clothes airers, clothes lines in the garden, bathrooms fitted with extractor fans so you have different options for drying your clothes and damp towels.

If in doubt, please contact us for more information.   Help us keep you safe, health and well, so you are performing the best you can either at work or in your studies.
